The two sportspersons have brought laurels to the country in the past. While Mary Kom is an Olympic Bronze medallist, Rathore has won a silver in the shooting in the Olympic Games too. This time, however, while Mary was in her boxing gear, Rathore decided to put on the punching mitts and help the veteran boxer train. While Rathore was trying to evade most of Mary’s attack, he also surprised the boxer by some punches from his end.
“Today, he came to the national camp and it was great for all of us. All the boxers in the camp felt motivated by his presence at the training. It was a nice gesture by him,” Mary Kom was quoted as saying by PTI about the practice session she had with Rathore.
“He is taller than me, so reaching him was a challenge. But I think I did alright,” she chuckled. But when asked about who had actually challenged whom for the bout, Mary replied saying, “It was actually the photographers who came to shoot, they wanted some action. We said ‘ok we will give you action’. He was also enjoying himself and so was I.”
The 48-year-old Rathore did manage to escape a few punches by effectively dodging the boxer’s punches, although it is understood that she wouldn’t have thrown them with the intensity she usually would against an opponent. Mary Kom, who will the lead the Indian contingent, was on Wednesday named as the brand ambassador of the event. “This World Championship is special in lot many ways, I would definitely give my best shot and want to live the feeling of winning gold in front of the home crowd,” said the five-time World Champion Mary Kom.
