India got its second gold in the 21st Commonwealth Games. Weightlifter Sanjita Chanu gave this medal in the 53 kg category on Friday. She weighed a total of 192 kgs (84 kg in snatch and 108 kg in clean and jerk.
India’s female weightlifter player Sanjita Chanu gave India its second gold medal in the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. Chanu took 84 kilograms of weight in the snatch, which was a game record. At the same time, she took 108 kilograms in clean and jerk, and with a total score of 192, she won gold medal.
24-year-old Sanjita is from Manipur
Sanjita Chanu was inspired by India’s star player N Kunjarani Devi in weightlifting and started taking interest in weightlifting from the age of 12. She is an employee of Indian Railways. Sanjita is shy outside the field but aggressive on the field.
Chanu came to headlines in 2011
Sanjita first came in the headlines, when she won the Bronze Medal at the 2011 Asian Weightlifting Championship. In 2012, she won gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship. In 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games she won gold by lifting 173 kg at the age of 20 .
Chanu appealed in the High Court on getting Arjuna Award
Sanjita was not chosen for the Arjuna Award in 2017. Contrary to this, she approached the Delhi High Court. Her argument was that despite giving best performance for two consecutive years, she was not chosen for the award. While the Sports Ministry selected athletes giving less performance to them for this award.
Sanjita did not get the Arjuna Award, but she won took her revenge by winning Gold Medal in the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
Before that, in 2015, boxer Manoj Kumar also reached the High Court in protest of not getting Arjuna Award. After the court intervened, he got the Arjuna Award.
Like Manipur’s Mirabai Chanu, Sanjita also considers Kunjarani Devi as her role model.
