The Pathan brothers hailed from a Pashtun ancestry in Gujarat. Their father served as the muezzin in Baroda which is now Vadodara. Both their parents wanted the Pathan brothers to become scholar in the field of Islam, however both the Pathan brothers who played Cricket on the streets of Baroda always wanted to represent the country.
2) Coaching with Captain Gaekwad!
Yusuf Pathan has worked very hard to reach where he has reached today, he trained for more than 6 hours a day everyday under the watchful eyes of former Indian captain Datta Gaekwad in Baroda. He then went on to represent Baroda in Ranji trophy in the 2001-02 season.
3) First taste of Success!
The Pathan power first unleashed it’s destruction in a Triangular series while representing India-A in 2008. India-A were struggling at 66 for 5 with players like Robin Uthappa, Dinesh Karthik, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and Badrinath back in the hut. Senior Pathan walked in at 66 for 5 in the 12th over and was dismissed on the last ball of the 50th over. He smashed a 148 of just 123 balls with 9 fours and 9 massive sixes. India-A ended on a mammoth total of 305 and went on to win the game by 81 runs!
4) When the Pathan Brothers rescued Team India!
In 2009, India were up against Sri Lanka in a T20I. India were set a daunting target of 172 by the Lankan’s and the men in blue were struggling at 115-7. Many were sure that India is not going to make it, but the Pathan brothers had other ideas. Irfan and Yusuf joined hands and hammered the Lankan’s all over the park and added 59 runs in just 25 balls. India won the game with 4 balls to spare.
5) IPL’s Fastest Century!
Yusuf Pathan was in the form of his life during the first edition of the Indian Premier League! He was one of the main reasons why Rajasthan Royals led by Shane Warne went on to win the trophy! Yusuf Pathan hammered a 37 ball 100 against the star studded Mumbai Indians to record the fastest century in IPL cricket. His record stood tall for 4 editions until Chris Gayle broke it with a 100 in just 30 balls!
6) Ranji Trophy’s fastest half century!
In the 2015-2016 season of the Ranji Trophy, Yusuf Pathan smashed a 50 in just 18 balls for Baroda. Which was then the fastest half century in Ranji Trophy cricket, his recored was soon broken by Bandeep Singh who got a half century in 15 balls.

Yusuf Pathan once played in a triangular series held in Nairobi, Kenya. He was representing the Baroda side who were playing against Gujarat and Kenya’s international side. A fan who had come to see the game who had come to watch the game was carrying a placard which said “ Yusuf Pathan the greatest one day player after the great Sachin Tendulkar”.
